Four checks, every tire

Nothing goes on the site because it looks alright. Every tire is put through the same four steps, and what it scores is printed on its own page rather than summarised for the whole shelf.

  1. 1

    Gauged

Depth is read with a gauge at several points across the face. The lowest reading is the one published, so the number on the page is the worst part of the tire and not the best.

  2. 2

    Inspected inside and out

Sidewall, shoulder and tread, then the inner liner. Cracking, a plug in the wrong place, or the feathered wear that comes off a bad alignment and it does not go on the shelf.

  3. 3

    Held under pressure

Inflated and leak-tested. A slow leak is the fault a buyer finds three days later in their own driveway, so it is found here instead.

  4. 4

    Written down, then published

The measured depth, the DOT build date and whether it has been repaired all go onto this tire's own page. Most sellers publish a size and a price. This is the part we would rather be judged on.

Some of these tires have been repaired, and we say which

A puncture through the tread can be repaired properly and safely, and a tire that has had one is still a good tire. When we have repaired one, the specification above says Repaired: Yes. You will never have to ask us.

We do not repair sidewalls, and we do not sell a tire that has had a sidewall repair. Not from us, not from anyone. There is no safe way to do it.

Before you buy

Will it fit my car?

Match all three numbers in the size, so a 225/65R17 replaces a 225/65R17. You will find them on the sidewall of the tire already on the car, and on the sticker inside the driver's door where the manufacturer printed the size the car left the factory on. That sticker is the one to trust if the two disagree, because the tire on the car may not be the right one. The load and speed rating on this page should also meet or beat what the sticker asks for. If you are unsure, ring us with the size and the car and we will check it with you before you order.

Should I buy one or two?

One is fine when the tire beside it on the same axle has a similar amount of tread left. When the two are far apart, the car pulls under hard braking and wears the newer one unevenly, so a pair is the better buy even though it costs more today. On an all wheel drive car it matters more than comfort: a big difference in tread depth across the four means the wheels turn at slightly different speeds, and over time that is hard on the driveline. Tell us what is on the car and we will say honestly whether one will do.

What you will not find here

Tread is read with a gauge at several points across the face and the lowest reading is the one published, so the number on this page is the worst part of the tire rather than the best. Anything that will not hold pressure, or that shows cracking in the sidewall, a plug in the shoulder, or the feathered wear that comes from a bad alignment, does not reach the site at all. Tires are priced and sold singly, and mounting and balancing are available in the shop if you are collecting.

What you are actually getting

  • Measured before it was listed

The tread depth on this page was read with a gauge on this tire, not taken from a chart.

How a tire gets on the shelf
  • Inspected and leak-tested

Checked inside and out before it went on the shelf. What does not pass does not reach the site.

  • Out the same business day

Paid before 2pm Pacific and it ships that day. Collecting in Santa Ana is free and ready the same business day on the same cutoff.

    Shipping
  • 30 days to change your mind

Unfitted only. If we got it wrong it costs you nothing; if you change your mind there is a 15% restocking fee and the return shipping is yours.
